South Normanton lies on the Derbyshire Nottinghamshire border and
makes up part of Bolsover District Council. The village probably
developed from the two settlements of Carlingthwaite(Carnfield) and
Normantune and was based on agriculture, bell pit mining and later
framework knitting. Until the 1970s it was encircled by
collieries which provided its main source of employment. This was
hazardous work and on15th Feb. 1937 there was an explosion at South
Normanton Colliery which killed eight(8) men.
The Parish Church of St. Michaels and All Angels has
architectural features from C12 C19 including a C15 Tower.
Normantons most well known landmark was the Old
Post Mill which stood in what is now the Windmill Rise Estate. In
1981 it was demolished due to its poor state, with a view to its
restoration. There was also a Tower Mill adjacent to the Parish
Church which has been converted into a private residence.

Normantons most famous son was Jedediah
Strutt who was born in 1726 in the old post office yard.
He invented the Derby Rib Stocking Machine, later going
into partnership with Richard Arkwright, opening textile mills in Belper
(world heritage site) and Derby. He died in 1797 aged 70.
